THE CHALLENGES

Motivation

My first experience in teaching earth science has been on September 2005 in among the public secondary schools in Davao Oriental, specifically in District 1. I can still remember the primary day when I entered the class greater than fifty (50) students crowded in a classroom. Some of them were busy conntacting their classmates, some were busy doing different tasks into their seats, etc. The first question that will popped into my mind in that moment was: how should i get the attention of the students? As I introduced myself in their eyes as their new technology teacher, I saw different emotions reflecting on their faces. There were feelings of excitement, worries, anxieties, happiness, etc. I am not necessarily sure if they were able to take new lessons in earth science. What I did has been to let them get some paper and let them write inside: their names, favorite theme, subject they hate almost all and why they love/hate a particular subject, and their expectation/s of the subject. I did this simply to know whether they have involvement in the subject or to understand what subjects they liked best and reasons why they love the theme. From that, I learned that out greater than fifty (50) students, only four (4) said which they like science subject. When I asked them why they do not like science as a subject matter, the common answer has been: “Science is a difficult subject”. From that expertise alone, I got an insight that students may have difficulty in learning a subject if they do not like the subject. In fact, teaching Earth Science to undergraduates or high school students could be difficult “if the students usually are not motivated or if they are not interested in your subject”.
